Matar's body of work spans fiction and nonfiction, and reflects his deep personal connection to Libya's tumultous history. His memoir The Return (2016), which won the Pulitzer Prize, recounts his emotional journey back to Libya after 33 years in exile to search for the fate of his father, a prominent dissident who was abducted by Qaddafi's regime. Matar's novels, including In the Country of Men (2006), Anatomy of a Disappearance (2011), and My Friends (2024), explore themes of displacement, resistance, and enduring bonds of friendship. His most recent work, My Friends, was awarded the Orwell Prize for Political Fiction in 2024 and was a finalist for both the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award.

Matar will join the other GGD Fellows this year in Rome (June) and Barcelona (November) for dialogues about literature and culture as they relate to human fraternity and social solidarity.
